Controversies: Shugden, New Kadampa Tradition, Sogyal & more

It’s an endless task and probably a waste of time to respond and correct all the claims and ‘truths’ of WSS/NKT. However, some humour is always helpful.

This image of WSS ‘proofs’ ‘more religious persecution by the Dalai Lama’.

Monks using a hose and buckets to bring water into their room is the sign for WSS/NKT that “Shugden monks outcast from their monastery and then their water is cut off.”

According to the related YouTube Video this image was sent to a Western woman from Sera Monastery (India).

According to a monk who knows the situation in Sera Monastery (India) well: “While at Sera our house had several water shortages and we used a similar method. Most, if not all, of the larger houses have a water tank on the roof that collects water when available, but once this is used up, especially in dry season, it can be 2 days or so until the water supply is replenished. Monsoon, from what my friend told me, just came two or three days ago. The smaller houses are often completely dependent on rain water from the eavestrough. Drinking water is available at several outlets throughout the monastery, and that is what monks generally drink. It is an unfortunate expense that must be beared if one wants to live at Sera without dysentery.”

What reality is behind the story about the ‘Segregation Wall at Ganden Monastery”?

According to WSS “it’s appearance is deceptive and hides a sinister purpose. Each brick is an eerie symbol of inhumanity and hatred, instilled on the basis of religious belief by one person’s lies.”

To quote post #124 from the New York Times: “Big thanks to the WSS for taking on the unpleasant task of exposing this ugly carbuncle on the face of Tibetan Buddhism.”

Horror or Humour: that is the question: Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles…

Encouraged by WSS/NKT’s approach I found the proof that NKT is performing black magic. Look at the following image and see the truth behind the NKT:

The appearance of the NKT temple is deceptive and hides a sinister purpose. Each brick is an eerie symbol of overt proselytizing, catching innocent newbies, turning their mind towards autocrat leadership, inhumanity and hatred, instilled on the basis of religious belief by one person’s lies.

Look how dark the temple is, dark as the soul of WSS/NKT, what a horror! Puuh, be frightened!

According to a Buddhist monk living in Sera:

Honestly, from having lived in Sera monastery and visiting Ganden twice, similar walls were there before the whole Shugden mess. These walls are necessary in order to prevent livestock from coming in to the property and also to block the noise from traffic coming in. EVERY large house in India has high walls surrounding it, not just the Tibetan camps.

I see a wall as a wall, no more, no less. This is not reminiscent of Jews in the Ghetto because the wall acted as a prison to keep them in the camps. No one has alleged that the Shugdens don’t have freedom of movement. They are just trying to draw extreme parallels to support their case.

Sera Monastery in India has since years different walls. There is no “The Segregation Wall” as WSS/NKT wrongly claim. A monk sent two images from the Sera walls, commenting: “These [images] were taken in 2003/4, well before the restrictions on Shugden. It shows that at the monasteries in exile these walls do not serve to ghettoize Shugdenpas – only keep out goats!”

  1. Maybe we should all take more in consideration that there ARE many monks suffering all over the place, this situation is not funny. I don’t see any humor in innocent people being persecuted for their religious beliefs, this are monks who practice pure moral discipline… whatever i was just reading is proof of really how ignorant people can be sometimes.

    Comment by TP:
Thank you for your kind reminder. Yes of course there are thousands of monks suffering. Monks, nuns, women and men are tortured, oppressed and persecuted in Tibet for more than 50 years now. NKT never did something for them or is doing now for them. Did they pay even one Euro for them? I learnt NKT is ‘just not interested.’ Also in Burma lay people and many monks and nuns suffering all over the place.

I agree with what you say. So we should extent our perception of suffering, broaden our perspective to the whole image. We can include in that contemplation the suffering of the Tibetans in Tibet, of Tibetans in New York or India, the suffering of the Chinese in China, Tibet or Germany, the suffering of Geshe Kelsang, Gen Samden, Gen Thubten, Gen Dechen and their followers and detractors, the suffering of abused nuns, misled monks and nuns, the suffering of religious persons who suffer on fundamentalism and delusion, the suffering of those who are the targets of Buddhist fundamentalists and fanatic Buddhist killers, the suffering of the killers, the suffering of KFC chickens, the suffering of Shugden followers and non-Shugden followers, of the victims of earthquakes and their relatives, of Kelsang Pema, Lucy James, Mr. Bush, Osama Bin Laden, a mother who lost her child, the suffering of our parents, you and me…. The suffering of every sentient being, impartial compassion for everybody instead of partial compassion and ignorance. Yes, this is the way! Everybody is suffering, everyone deserves our compassion.

If we have impartial great compassion and wisdom there is no problem & there is no suffering.

BTW, what is the cause of suffering? Doesn’t even NKT teach the cause of suffering is self-cherishing, ignorance/delusions and Karma? What is the way to end the suffering?

The monks keeping pure monastic discipline follow the Vinaya. These rules include the Saṅghādisesa Rules (remainders), they are seen as very important. There are at least four vows, the 10th-13th remainder, related with the present situation:

    10. Causing a Division within the Sangha (monastic order)
    11. Siding with a schismatic (Geshe Kelsang Gyatso)
    12. Causing lay people to lose faith in the Sangha
    13. Not Heeding advice about one’s offences

Accusing wrongly a Bhikshu and respected elder, HH the Dalai Lama, in the public of a Big Lie can be seen as going against the rules too.

Buddhist monks and nuns should inspire both Buddhist and non-Buddhist lay people. The aggressive behaviour of robed protesters, raising their fists, yelling for hours in public places, their use of abusive language against the Dalai Lama is harming the reputation of Buddhist monastics. All this is contradicting the Vinaya and the spirit of Buddhism. It is just consequent that e.g. the Australian Sangha Association condemned the protests.

In general I don’t wish to deny that there may have happened things to Shugden followers which are injustice or that in some cases people over reacted and that Shugden followers were probably treated unfair. I am sorry for everyone who is harmed.

But on the other hand this is also true for those who were threatened by followers of Shugden, e.g. the Abbot of Sera Je, the three killed monks or just the fact that Shugden monks tied up a representative of the Dharamsala Tibetan Exile government to a chair. There is no one-way in that issue. (see post #103 by Monk Khedrub in the NYT article).

Things happen due to many causes, conditions & circumstances, they are dependent arising. It is impossible to blame one person, HHDL, if one understands that.

  2. Hi Tenzin,

I have seen many of your posts on various blogs. You are a monk with the FPMT which follows the advice of Lama Zopa, right? I just came across Lama Zopa’s advice that he posts on his website about the Dorje Shugdan issue http://www.lamayeshe.com/lamazopa/advicebook/practice/shugden.shtml(I will paste below). Why not follow this kind Lama’s advice?

“By giving up Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, you have created heavy negative karma in this life. Since you haven’t given me up, I suggest that you confess to Geshe Kelsang Gyatso about what happened, and devote yourself again to this virtuous friend.

According to guru devotion practice, no matter how many gurus you have, you should look at all of them as one being, one mind, and that is Dharmakaya. That view must come from the disciple’s side. You look at them as one mind in different bodies, acting in different ways, according to the karma of sentient beings and their ordinary mistaken minds.

This is what one should practice, if one wants profit and not loss. So, change your attitude and apologize to Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Confess to him and follow him again, unless he says, “No”. This will help lighten your heaviest negative karma.

  3. Hi pure intention. I am not a monk with the FPMT and I am no disciple of Lama Zopa Rinpoche. The assumption you base your comment upon is incorrect.

I do not share the quoted point of view of Lama Zopa Rinpoche. When I ask my teacher about it he said, I should not pay any attention to it. My pov to this quote you can find here:
